Stormy start to Budget session of Lok Sabha

The Budget session of Lok Sabha got off on a stormy note on Thursday with members of BJP, Samajwadi Party and Left parties forcing two brief adjournments during Question Hour by creating uproar over the hike in petrol and diesel prices.

Soon after the House met, MPs from SP and Left parties were on their feet to protest against the hike in petrol and diesel prices announced on Wednesday.

BJP and Shiv Sena members too lent their support, raising slogans and accusing the government of being anti-farmer. They said the increase in diesel prices would hit the farmers.

Speaker Meira Kumar tried to pacify the members and said she would allow them to speak during the Zero Hour, but the agitated members were unrelenting.

Finally, the Speaker adjourned the House for 20 minutes at 11.20 am. When the House met again, similar scenes were witnessed, following which the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon.

Amid the din, Union Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran answered a few questions.

Earlier, the Speaker made obituary references to two former members — Shiv Charan Mathur and Fasi-ur-Rehman Munnan Khan.

Shibu Soren of JMM took oath as a member.
