Review
Love Aaj London, San Francisco, Delhi - 2009. Jai and Meera is a modern-day couple in London. They are very happy together but do not believe in tying each other down. So when life pulls them in different directions, they decide to go with the flow.

"These Heer-Ranjha, Romeo-Juliet type janam janam ka saath type couples exist only in story books", Jai says. In the real life, we have to be practical. Love Kal Delhi, Calcutta - 1965.

Veer Singh is struck by the thunderbolt when he sees Harleen for the first time. Soon after, he stands under a tree and swears that “is janam mein aur har janam mein… yehi meri votti banegi – Harleen Kaur.” He travels a thousand kilometers by train to stand under her balcony only to have a glimpse of her face. And yet not speak a word with her.

Love Aaj Kal Veer does not understand how Jai can treat matters of the heart without passion, like a financial transaction. Jai does not understand how Veer Singh could have been so naïve and silly about Harleen in the days of his youth. But as both stories unfold, we realize that the process of relationship might be different in different eras, but the experience of being in love remains the same. So there is the frolic and despair of modern living. The liberation and confusion. And there is the past – the times of innocence and compulsion. And there is distance, and the fondness that increases with distance. Gaps widen between two people, but bridges keep growing too.

Google Earth Adds Moon To Celebrate Apollo 11 Landing

To mark the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969, Google on Monday released Moon in Google Earth, which allows users to explore lunar images and related lunar content.
In a post on the official Google (NSDQ: GOOG) blog, Anousheh Ansari, the first female private space explorer and a trustee of the XPRIZE Foundation, says the software will help millions of people learn about space.

InformationWeek's Mitch Wagner demonstrates how to "get good" at Twitter."Moon in Google Earth enables you to explore lunar imagery as well as informational content about the Apollo landing sites, panoramic images shot by the Apollo astronauts, narrated tours and much more," she explains. "I believe that this educational tool is a critical step into the future, a way to both develop the dreams of young people globally, and inspire new audacious goals."
Four years ago to the day, Google launched Google Moon, a way to explore the Moon using its Web-based Google Maps service rather than Google Earth, a desktop application. There's also a Google Maps-based Mars.

Other extra-terrestrial layers in Google Earth include Sky and Mars. There's also an Ocean layer, which was launched in February with the release of Google Earth 5.0.

Moon in Google Earth details all of the Apollo landing missions, and offers lunar surface panoramas in Google's Street View format. So far, there have been no privacy complaints.

Google's Moon project is a result of the company's Space Act Agreement with NASA. Japan's space agency JAXA also helped out by donating a global terrain dataset of the Moon.

California Budget Deal Reached By Legislators, Schwarzenegger

California lawmakers reached an agreement with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger over how to close a $26 billion budget deficit that pushed the most-populous U.S. state to the brink of insolvency.

The deal, reached by legislative leaders after two months of frequently acrimonious negotiations, would slash spending for schools, public works and welfare programs amid the longest recession since the 1930s. If approved by the full Senate and Assembly, the agreement will also siphon money from municipalities, force companies and individuals to pay income taxes sooner and make it more difficult to receive state aid.

“We came to a basic agreement, a budget agreement,” Schwarzenegger told reporters outside his office last evening. “This is a budget that has no tax increases and this is a budget that is cutting spending and it deals with the entire $26 billion deficit.”

The agreement promises to end a battle over the $100 billion budget that forced California to pay some bills with IOUs, pushed debt ratings on $72 billion of bonds closer to non- investment grade and threatened to further batter the state’s economy. It is the second time this year that the government redrew the budget amid job losses that pushed unemployment to 11.5 percent in May and declining incomes that lowered tax collections 15 percent from a year earlier.

Senate and Assembly leaders said they will seek to put the proposals to a vote by July 23. It would require passage of more than a dozen bills by a two-thirds margin. While Democrats control both chambers of the Legislature, they are six votes shy of such a supermajority.

Obama honours first men to land on moon

Lalit K Jha Washington: Describing Apollo 11 astronauts as the "three genuine American heroes", US President Barack Obama, honouring them at the White House, said their exploration sparked innovation and creativity back on earth. In an impressive ceremony, commemorating the 40 years of Moon mission, Obama honoured Apollo 11 Mission Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and hailed them as "three iconic figures".

Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the moon as Collins flew above. "Very rarely do I have such an extraordinary pleasure as I have today to welcome three iconic figures, three genuine American heroes," Obama said, adding: "To have Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin here beside me is just wonderful.

" "The touchstone for excellence in exploration and discovery is always going to be represented by the men of Apollo 11," Obama said. "Their work sparked "innovation, the drive, the entrepreneurship, the creativity back here on Earth".

88 ragging cases, 12 deaths in last one year: Study

New Delhi: sustained campaigns by the media and government, ragging appears to be going on unbated in India with 88 cases and 12 deaths being reported in the last one year, according to a new study. Andhra Pradesh topped the list with 12 ragging cases, followed by West Bengal (10), Uttar Pradesh (10) and Punjab (8), the report today released by anti-ragging NGO Coalition to Uproot Ragging from Education (CURE) claimed.

"The number of ragging cases reported in the media from July 2008 to June 2009 are 88, number of ragging deaths are 12 and number of attempted suicides are five," the study said. During the same period last year, 89 ragging cases were reported, out of which 11 resulted in deaths.

There were five attempted suicides too, said the group which regularly records and tabulates reports of ragging cases from the media. "This clearly indicates that despite the tall claims made by the HRD Ministry, UGC and various regulatory bodies, the situation has not improved," Harsh Aggarwal of CURE said.

"In the last academic session, Andhra Pradesh reported 12 incidents of ragging, including four cases of death and a case of attempted suicide. Punjab, even though a small state, has consistently reported high number of such incidents," he said.

Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, which did not report any ragging cases in the past, recorded high number of incidents this year (6 and 7 respectively). Among the cases in HP was the death of medical student Aman Kachroo, which caused widespread outrage and prompted the Central and state governments to take a number of anti-ragging measures.

"She is a non-violent leader in the mould of Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. The award is in recoginition of her strong commitment to non-violence, justice and peace," he said.

We are not sure whether she knows about this award but what we can tell you that our chairperson Ela Gandhi, had sent a letter to the Burmese ambassador in Pretoria and it was returned without being opened, he added. England beat Australia by 115 runs in 2nd Ashes Test

London: England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff celebrated his final test at Lord's on Monday with five for 92 to give the home side their first victory over Australia at the home of cricket for 75 years.

Australia, who had resumed at 313 for five in their second innings chasing 522 for victory, were bowled out for 406 in the morning session. England won by 115 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

"To win an Ashes test match at Lord's is something that many guys have dreamt of doing over the last 50, 60 years or so and to be the 11 guys who have actually pulled it off, it feels very, very special at the moment," England captain Andrew Strauss said.

Flintoff, who will retire from test cricket after the fifth test at the Oval next month, said: "It's nice to get five on the last morning and take the plaudits but it's been a real team effort."

England's only test victory of the 20th century against Australia at Lord's came in 1934 when Yorkshire left-arm spinner Hedley Verity took 15 wickets on a rain-affected pitch, dismissing Don Bradman twice.

"We were outplayed right through the course of the game," Australia captain Ricky Ponting told Sky TV. "I think from the first ball on the first day, right up until the end today, I think England have been the better team."

Flintoff bowled magnificently for the second day in a row, rapping Brad Haddin on the pads with his third ball which beat the Australian wicketkeeper for pace.

The next drew Haddin forward, caught the outside edge and flew low to Paul Collingwood at second slip. He had not added to his overnight score of 80.

Mitchell Johnson got off the mark with a handsome drive for four off Anderson. He was then struck on the pads by a low full toss from Flintoff which would have hit the stumps but umpire Rudi Koertzen had already signalled a no-ball.

Michael Clarke, 125 not out overnight, unfurled a glorious off-drive to the boundary off Stuart Broad, who had replaced James Anderson at the Nursery end.

Johnson off-drove Broad for four to bring up the 350 but then lost Clarke, who was bowled for 136 by Graeme Swann's second delivery of the morning. The batsman was deceived in the flight by a ball which knocked back his off-stump.

CROWD SUPPORT

Flintoff, still steaming in from the Pavilion end after more than an hour of high-pace bowling, bowled Nathan Hauritz for one and Peter Siddle for seven.

Johnson, dropped on 36 hitting a difficult return chance to Swann, continued to play his shots while wickets fell at the other end. He was the last man out, bowled by Swann for 63 with nine boundaries.

Flintoff, who twisted his right knee during the first drawn test in Cardiff, said he would have been unwilling to surrender the ball on Monday.

"It's one of those situations where you are a little bit tired or you might be aching a little bit but when the crowd get behind you you just can't stop," he told Sky TV.

"I just want to give a special mention to Andrew Flintoff, who was magnificent this morning," Strauss said.

"We are not going to get carried away, there's a lot more cricket to be played in this series but to go 1-0 up and, I think, deserve a victory, makes it even better."

Ponting said his team needed to pick themselves up again for the third test at Edgbaston, starting on July 30.

"One-nil down now with three test matches to go we've got to regroup and hit the ground running at Edgbaston," he said.

"At the end of the day we were beaten by over 100 runs in a test and we can't change anything that's happened in the course of the game, only our own performances and that's what we've got to do with some hard work over the next week."

When the crowd applauded his comments, Ponting added, laughing: "That's the first round of applause I've got for five days."

Malay court orders caning of Singapore model for having beer

Kuantan: A religious court in Malaysia has sentenced a Singaporean Muslim model to six strokes of the cane after she drank beer at a nightclub.

The 32-year-old part-time model from Singapore was charged with having a beer at a nightclub last year and a Shariah High Court ordered that she should receive six strokes of the rotan.

Kartika Sari Sewi Shu-karno, who pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol in public when she made her first court appearance in December, was also fined 1730 dollars.

The model, who wore a blue baju kurung and black headscarf, kept her head down and was silent as Judge Datuk Abdul Rahman Yunus read out the sentence.

He said the accused could face a three-year jail term if she could not pay the fine while federal prison authorities would carry out the rotan, the New Strait Times reported.

The judge said the sentence was being nhanded out under Section 136 of the Pahang Islamic and Malay Traditional Practices Enactment 1982 (Amendment 1987).

"The court reached the judgment after the accused pleaded guilty. We feel the sentence is fair after going through the prosecution's argument and since the rotan is provided for in the law. The rotan is aimed at making the accused repent and serves as a lesson to Muslims."

Kartika committed the offence at a hotel night club in Cherating and was arrested during a raid by a team from the state religious department at 1.20 a.m. on July 12, 2007.

Her lawyer Mohd Zuki Che Muhamad Ghani said he would file an application for a stay of execution pending an appeal.

This is the second time that the Shariah Court here has imposed whipping on a female. The first was on a waitress and a man who were caught together with Kartika during the same operation in Cherating

Pakistan rejects Kasab's "under pressure" confessions

Islamabad: Pakistan has rejected Ajmal Amir Kasab's confessions regarding his involvement in the 26/11 carnage.

Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar termed Kasab's confessions as "one sided" and said that it was made "under pressure".

"I don't know how much one can value them (statements) in the court of law. The statements are one-sided and they were made by a person who is under the custody of Indian jail authorities. If he has stood up and given this statement I don't know under what pressure he was," Mukhtar told televisions channels.

He also questioned the credibility of confessions, saying Kasab has changed his statements in court on several previous occasions.

"There cannot be any credibility of the statement of a person who has changed his statements a couple of times," The Nation quoted Mukhtar, as saying.

When enquired that whether the confessions would lead to crackdown on terrorist groups operating in the country, Mukhtar said one cannot crack down on groups on the basis of confessions by a person behind bars.

"They (confessions) are no evidences. These were provided by a person who is behind the bars. We cannot crackdown on people based on his statements," he said.

Mukhtar reiterated that New Delhi should hand over all evidence against the perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attacks, and said Islamabad is committed to bring the masterminds to justice.

Earlier, Kasab, the lone surviving attacker of November 2008 attack, pleaded guilty to the offence before a Mumbai court.
For the first time in his confession, Kasab said, "Mujhe mera gunha kabool hai (I plead guilty to my crime)."

Narrating the entire plot, he confessed that he came along with nine other terrorists in a boat from Karachi.

Kasab also owned up for his involvement in attacks at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and at Cama Hospital.

He named Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative and alleged mastermind Zakir-ur-Rehman Lakhvi as the key conspirator, saying he was instructed to conduct a fidayeen (suicide) attack in Mumbai.

Kasab has been charged with murder, conspiracy and waging war against India along with other crimes. His trial was to have started on April 15 but was put off as his lawyer, Anjali Waghmare, had been dismissed for a conflict of interest. He has sicne been represented by a new lawyer named Abbas Kazmi.

Kasab's confession came two days after the Pakistan Government filed a chargesheet against five 26/11 prime accused suspects.

Westerner consumers more receptive to unexpected gifts than East Asian once

Washington: A new piece of research has found Westerner consumers to be more receptive to unexpected promotional gifts than their East Asian counterparts.

Published in the Journal of Consumer Research, the study report states that people from diverse cultures react differently to the element of surprise.

The authors—Ana Valenzuela (Baruch College), Barbara Mellers (University of California, Berkeley), and Judi Strebel (San Francisco State University)—say that the researchers explored different cultural responses to promotional gifts, such as gift cards, mugs, snacks, t-shirts, etc.

They say that four studies were conducted in which participants received a gift as a token of appreciation for participating in a survey.

The authors say that some of the participants had the prior knowledge or the gifts, while others were surprised.

They add that irrespective of what the gifts were, participants hailing from the U.S. were found to enjoy the surprise more than those from Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, and Hong Kong.

"Why does this phenomenon happen? For Westerners, an unexpected gift reinforces feelings of control over their environment. For East Asians, an unexpected gift indicates imbalance and prophesizes bad fortune. Our findings suggest that East Asians experience of surprise is closely connected to their motivation to seek emotional balance," the authors write.

The final experiment involved approaching bookstore patrons in California and Hong Kong, and asking them to participate in a short survey.

The authors say that those ready to participate were told that they would be given a gift as a token of appreciation.

Half of the participants entered the "Lucky Game" to win the gift, while the other half received the gift without participating in the game.

East Asians enjoyment of the gift increased when it was attributable to luck.

Based on that finding, the researchers came to the conclusion that framing surprises as "good luck" or "good fortune" could enhance East Asians enjoyment of a shifting environment.

"Marketers often use pleasant surprises to influence consumers brand evaluations and purchase decisions. Unexpected marketing activities must accommodate cross-cultural differences," the authors write.

Women use online TV more than men do

Wellington: Women use OnDemand online television service more than men do, to watch the episodes of programmes missed on TV, reveals a study.

The study, headed by research firm Colmar Brunton, found that 76 per cent of more than 600 viewers were female and 80 per cent fell under the age bracket of 40.

According to TVNZ, nearly 1.5 million programmes were being watched each month, and nine out of 10 watched OnDemand at home, reports Stuff.co.nz.

Broadcasting expert Peter Thompson tagged the research findings far from surprising.

The lecturer at Unitec said that women watched more soaps, which could account for the gender divide

Jenna, Barbara Bush were Secret Service's nightmare, claims new book

New York: George W. Bush's daughters, Jenna and Barbara, kept the Secret Service at their feet at all times, claims a new book.

Writer Ronald Kessler alleges in his 'In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes With Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect' that the twins always tried to hoodwink the security.

"Jenna would purposely try to lose her protection by going through red lights or by jumping in her car without telling agents where she was going,” the New York Post quoted Kessler as having written in the book.

"As a result, in a total waste of manpower, the Secret Service kept her car under surveillance so agents could follow her," he added.

Sally McDonough, Laura Bush's press secretary, on being quizzed if Barbara, Jenna, or Hager had any comment, told the author: "I am making a formal request that you do not include any of this nonsense in your book."

Ramesh's Hindi disease command draws opposition's flak in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: Replying to parliamentary questions in English once again, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh found himself in trouble on Monday when a BJP member objected to him not responding in Hindi in the Rajya Sabha.

During Question Hour, when Ramesh replied in English to a supplementary put to him in Hindi, it triggered a sharp reaction from Kalraj Mishra (BJP) who asked why was he not replying in Hindi despite being fluent in it.

To this Ramesh commented in Hindi: "Kalraj Mishraji yeh Mulayam Singhji ki bimari aap ko bhi pahuch gayi hai (this 'disease' of Mulyam Singh Yadav has reached you.”

The minister's remark drew flak from the BJP, SP and BSP members, who said Hindi was not a disease.

Earlier, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh had objected to Ramesh's response to a question put to him during Question Hour.

Singh had said: "You know Hindi; you can speak in Hindi; this is not London.” Conceding the point, the Minister switched to Hindi with ease.

Ramesh said in the Rajya Sabha that he was looking at cutting down the time taken in his ministry for processing applications for environment clearance for projects, but wanted a wider public hearing.

He said 210 days are given to complete all formalities for environment clearance for projects.
Separately, 150 days are taken for giving forest clearance once projects have been cleared by state governments.

Ramesh said the 210-day deadline for environment clearance is extended in some projects involving wildlife sanctuary, environment fragile zone and complicated project requiring enough safeguards.

Of the 210 days' deadline, 60 days are for setting terms of reference for environment impact assessment, 45 days for public hearing, 60 days for environment impact appraisal and 45 days for communicating the decision, he said adding the 60 days taken by his ministry may be reduced to 45 days

MJ's doctors 'unlikely to face homicide charges'

New York: Late King of Pop Michael Jackson's doctors are unlikely to face homicide charges, according to reports.

A senior law enforcement source familiar with the case said that doctors ordered to hand over the singer's medical records were not suspects.

"There's nothing I have been told that would suggest a murder charge. It's just so remote and so unsupported by the facts as they've been gathered," the New York Daily News quoted the source as having told the Los Angeles Times.

However, the source added that other possible counts against the experts had been considered, if they administered the potentially lethal drug Propofol to the star.

Vesna Maras, a former Los Angeles County deputy district lawyer who prosecuted a Propofol case five years ago, said that proving the cause of death would be not be an easy task.

She said: "Assuming you can show Propofol is in blood, you still have a long road to get to prosecuting."

Miranda Kerr helps Orlando Bloom forget watch loss trauma after robbery

London: Miranda Kerr has reportedly helped restore her beau Orlando Bloom's smile after the latter lost his vintage watches worth 200,000 pounds to a robbery.

The Victoria's Secret model was said to have been consoling the actor who was in New York at the time of the break-in at his LA home.

"If anyone could help a bloke forget about a trauma it would be Miranda. Orlando is still a lucky boy, that's for sure," the Daily Star quoted a source as saying.

Bloom is allegedly the owner of a collection of around 40 valuable watches.

He purportedly lost some of his favourite pieces, including a rare antimagnetic Rolex Milgauss watch from the 1950s worth 120,000 pounds.

Stella McCartney urges Lindsay Lohan to give up fur

Washington: Fashion designer Stella McCartney has reportedly urged actress Lindsay Lohan to give up fur.

The 'Mean Girls' star has been snapped wearing animal pelts and leather on numerous occasions, and last year campaigners in Paris, France, threw flour over her in protest at a fur coat she was sporting.

According to Britain's Mail, Stella, daughter of Beatles legend Paul McCartney and his late wife Linda, who's also a supporter of (PETA) has expressed her concerns about Lohan''s love of fur and leather goods.

"Lindsay wears a lot of Stella''s designs and she doesn''t want to be associated with a high-profile star who insists on wearing animal products," Contactmusic quoted a source as saying.

A spokeswoman for McCartney says: "She never uses fur and encourages everyone to opt for a vegetarian lifestyle."

Britain manufactured Japanese cars top reliability league

A British research has found that five of the top six reliable cars in Britain are Japanese, however, three of them are manufactured in Britain itself.

Warranty Direct, which compiled the Manufacturer Reliability Index top ten, listed Honda, which has its plant in Wiltshire, as the leader in the list of reliable cars, The Mirror.co.uk reports.

While, third is Derby-based Toyota and Nissan, which has a factory in Sunderland, is sixth in the list.

The research has also found that Honda-buyers can drive convincingly knowing that there is only a 10 per cent chance of a breakdown, when the car is between three and six years old.

On the other hand, Japanese companies- Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi- were also high in the index.

Reacting on the index, Honda spokesman Steve Kirk expressed pleasure and said: “We’re delighted to be top of the tree. It’s testament to our great workers at places like Swindon.”

The index estimated the most dependable used cars among 250 popular models.

At the bottom of the table, Land Rover was listed with a 47 per cent chance of a breakdown, while Renault and Saab ended up just behind the Rover

Delhi HC upholds conviction of Nanda in BMW hit and run case

The Delhi High Court has upheld the conviction of Sanjeev Nanda in the infamous BMW hit and run case, in which six persons were killed in 1999.

Justice Kailash Gambhir however reduced Nanda’s jail term from five to two years.

Nanda, a grandson of former Navy Chief Admiral S.M. Nanda, killed six persons while driving a BMW car in an inebriated condition in the wee hours of January 10, 1999 in the Lodhi Colony area of South Delhi.

Besides Nanda, the court had also sentenced Rajiv Gupta and Bhola Nath to a year and six months in jail, respectively.

Justice Gambhir also ordered for a criminal prosecution against controversial witness Sunil Kulkarni.

Earlier, Justice Gambhir had reserved his verdict in May. Challenging his conviction by a trial court, Nanda argued that the lower court had convicted him under media pressure.

The court convicted Nanda under the Section 304 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Why homosexual men fail to access vital services despite being high HIV risk group

A review written by University of Oxford experts highlights the fact that despite being a high risk group for HIV infection, homosexual men often fail to access vital services because of religious, political and social stigma.

Dr Adrian D Smith writes in the review that the HIV/AIDS community needs to take vital steps to address this crisis.

The review also points out that an effective response to HIV/AIDS requires improved strategic information about all risk groups, including men who have sex with men (MSM).

The authors say: "African MSM bear a considerably higher burden of HIV than do other men, and draw attention to an unmet need for prevention, treatment, and care."

Using data reported between 2003-09, the authors say that HIV prevalence among African MSM is generally considerably higher than among adult men in the general population.

They further write that in some West African countries, HIV prevalence in MSM is over 10 times that estimated in the male general population.

According to them, the difference varies substantially, but prevalence in most countries studied was higher in MSM populations.

The authors say: "Important conclusions from behavioural studies of African MSM are that unprotected anal sex is commonplace, knowledge and access to appropriate risk prevention measures are inadequate, and that, in some contexts, many MSM engage in transactional sex. Stigma, violence, detention, and lack of safe social and health resources are widely reported."

Discussing some of the challenges and misconceptions faced by the MSM community, the authors say that condoms and lubricants for safe sex are usually not available or prohibitively expensive.

They also say that messages about prevention targeted to heterosexual populations might seem irrelevant to MSM, for MSM might not consider same-sex encounters to be sex at all because this word can also infer reproduction.

The authors point out that MSM face family rejection, public humiliation, harassment by authorities, and ridicule by health workers, and most of them conceal their behaviour for fear of these repercussions.

Oz cricket columnist says Koertzen must retire now

Australia''s premier cricket writer Robert Craddock has said that South African and ICC elite umpire Rudi Koertzen should be asked to retire immediately following several questionable decisions that he took in the ongoing second Ashes Test at Lords

Stating that he should have retired two years ago when he convinced his co-umpires to misinterpret the rain rule, which made a farce of the World Cup final, Craddock said that Koertzen’s performance in the current Ashes was equally dismal.

“Amazingly, he is still at large making major blunders which shape the results of series,” Craddock writes in his news.com.au blog.

“I can forgive Billy Doctrove - just - for failing to detect the fact that Mike Hussey hit the ground and not the ball when he was given out. And even forgive Koertzen for not picking up that Flintoff’s dismissal of Katich should have been a no ball. But there was absolutely no excuse for Koertzen not to go to the third umpire to decide whether Andrew Strauss has correctly caught Phil Hughes at slip,” Craddock says.

“Had he done so Hughes would have been given not out because at the very least there was major doubt the ball carried? That Koertzen had to ask Doctrove what he thought should have been reason enough to go upstairs,” he adds

Elizabeth Taylor released from hospital after undergoing surgery

Hollywood legend Dame Elizabeth Taylor has been released from a Los Angeles hospital after undergoing surgery.

Taylor, 77, had been admitted to a medical centre near her home in Beverly Hills on July 13, with reports claiming that she was emotionally drained following the death of her long-term pal Michael Jackson.

Her spokesperson subsequently scotched those reports, insisting that she was there for a minor surgery.

“She is in for standard tests and a minor, though painful, surgical procedure. That’s it. No drama, no shrieking, no sedation required. Nobody on her staff is worried. Period,” the Daily Star quoted the representative as saying.

The ‘Taming of the Shrew’ star, who was in the hospital for five days, returned home to continue her recuperation.

“I’m home from the hospital sore, but intact. Of course I’m still grieving for Michael... I always will,” she wrote on her Twitter.com blog.

“I’ve had many tragedies in my life, but I guess they have all taught me something. I have to look at it that way,” she added.

50 Cent slashes asking price for his mansion by £5M

American rapper 50 Cent, real name Curtis James Jackson, has had to slash the asking price for his mansion by 5 million pounds.

The 34-year-old singer, also known as Fiddy, had put the 19-bedroom pad, which has 37 bathrooms and a disco with stripper poles, on the market two years ago for 11.5 million pounds, reports the Sun.

The price of the house in Hartford, Connecticut, which was once owned by boxer Mike Tyson, was then brought down to 9 million pounds, and it has now been reduced further to 6.5 million pounds.

The singer had spent 2.5 million pounds for the home, and another 3.5 million pounds doing it up.

But the ‘Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ star, born in tough Queens, New York, has now got tired of the two-hour commute to his home city, and also wants a more modest pad

Kate Moss wants to join boyfriend's band

If sources are to be believed, supermodel Kate Moss will is keen to join her beau Jamie Hince''s band The Kills and is set to audition for him later this week.

Jamie is currently looking for a new singer to perform with after 30-year-old rocker Alison Mosshart left the duo to focus on her other musical project The Dead Weather - which also includes White Stripes guitarist Jack White.

The British supermodel, who is no stranger to the music world, will now reportedly audition for her lover’s group Kills to replace Mosshart, reports Contactmusic.

Auditions are scheduled for later this week, and despite being Jamie’s girlfriend for two years, the catwalk beauty won''t receive any favourable treatment.

This isn’t the first time when Moss has expressed her desire to perform with her man.

Last month, the 35-year-old asked Jamie to let her join The Kills on stage at a charity event in London, but the guitarist was not in favour of the idea.

"Kate is keen on doing more singing, she wants her voice out there. But Jamie is refusing to even entertain the idea," a source said

India will not pull out of Iran gas pipeline project: Deora

The Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora has made clear that India will not bow to any external pressure on the participation in Iran – Pakistan – India gas pipe line.

Replaying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Deora said there are some outstanding issues including finalization of the gas price with Iran.

Deora told the house that the energy needs of the country are paramount and that there is no question of succumbing to any external pressure in the energy sector.

India is very sure that the Iran –Pakistan-India pipeline project is good for all the three parties. The project has been considerably delayed, as it has not been able to decide on price of gas with Iran, Deora said.

Deora informed members that transportation tariff to be paid for the wheeling of the gas through a section of the pipeline passing through Pakistan and the transit fee to be paid to that country for allowing passage is yet to be finalised.

Deora said that India would get the custody of the gas at the Iran –Pakistan border.

Deora also assured members that he has cleared India’s stance regarding New Delhi’s participation in this pipeline project to US Energy Secretary Sam Bodman.

Australia batting struggle against Anderson

London: Pace bowler James Anderson produced his best bowling for England against Australia on Friday to help restrict the visitors to 156 for eight on the second day of the second Ashes test at Lord's.

When play was called off for bad light, Australia still needed 70 runs to avoid the follow-on after dismissing England for 425 in the morning session. Australia have not lost a test at the headquarters of world cricket since 1934.

Anderson contributed 29 runs to a last wicket stand of 47 after England had lost wickets in each of the three opening overs after resuming on 364 for six.

Bowling from the Nursery end with pace, aggression and late movement he then took four for 36 from 17 overs, magnificently supported by Andrew Flintoff.

Anderson struck with the third ball of his second over when Phillip Hughes gloved an attempted hook to Matt Prior behind the stumps.

KEY WICKET

He then captured the important wicket of Australia captain Ricky Ponting who was controversially caught at first slip by Andrew Strauss for two.

Anderson's shout for lbw looked a good one but umpire Rudi Koertzen, after consulting his colleague Billy Doctrove, ruled that Ponting had been caught.

The floodlights shone for the first time in a test at Lord's and, with the help of two rain breaks, Australia reached 87 for two at tea with Simon Katich on 40 and Michael Hussey on 37.

Both left-handers played cautiously after the break, with Hussey the more fluent. After his indifferent form in recent tests, Hussey looked back to his best with fluent drives and deft placements.

The pair advanced the total to 103 when Stuart Broad took a wonderful diving catch at fine-leg off Graham Onions to dismiss Katich for 48.

Hussey was bowled for 51 by Flintoff leaving a ball which struck his off-stump and Michael Clarke (1) was well held by Alastair Cook at short mid-wicket off Anderson.

Cook took two further leg-side catches off mistimed hooks from Mitchell Johnson (4) and Brad Haddin (28) and Australia were in deep trouble at the close.

England lost captain Andrew Strauss to the second ball of the day, leaving a delivery from Ben Hilfenhaus which came back down the slope to hit his off-stump. Strauss had batted throughout the first day for 161.

Wickets fell in each of the next two overs with Graeme Swann (4) and Stuart Broad falling for 16 to Peter Siddle and Hilfenhaus.

Bangladesh spinners have W.Indies in trouble again

ST.GEORGE'S fresh from their first overseas test win, spun their way into a strong position on the first day of the second test against a makeshift West Indies team in an almost empty stadium.

With tour captain and seamer Mashrafe Mortaza ruled out with injury, Bangladesh went into the game with three spinners and, after putting in West Indies, the trio collected three wickets each as the hosts were dismissed for 237.

West Indies, again missing their leading players who are striking in a dispute over contracts and payments, collapsed after a good start. Travis Dowlin top scored with 95.

As in St.Vincent though, local fans showed little interest in watching what could not even be called a second-string West Indies team.

The day started brightly for Floyd Reifer's side with openers Dale Richards and Omar Phillips making a positive start before Bangladesh, who must have been delighted to see another turning track, switched to spin.

Phillips drove stand in skipper Shakib Al Hasan to Tamim Iqbal to leave West Indies at 60 for one in the 13th over.

Richards powered on though, making his first test half-century but the introduction of Mohammed Mahmudullah - the match-winner last week - turned the innings in Bangladesh's favour.

Richards crashed Mahmudullah's second ball for six but then gave the off-spinner a simple caught and bowled - two balls later, Ryan Hinds, brought in to strengthen the batting doled up an almost identical catch to the spinner.

After lunch, West Indies again showed their inability to deal with the slow turning ball - Reifer was trapped leg before to Mahmudullah and then Dave Bernard woefully sliced Al Hasan to Mohammed Ashraful at point.

Enamul Haque, brought in for Mortaza, had Darren Sammy lbw and then had West Indies keeper Chadwick Walton with the worst shot of the day - a half-hearted mis-timed slog to Ashraful at mid-on.

Dowlin got a little support from the tail but then brought a close to the innings, five short of his maiden test century when he was superbly caught by Tamim Iqbal at cover off Al Hasan.

Bangladesh lost opener Imrul Kayes, caught behind off Sammy, as they moved to 35 for one in the ten over session before the close.

Obama urges Congress to stay vigilant on healthcare

WASHINGTON - President Obama, worried about growing resistance to his healthcare plan, exhorted Congress yesterday not to “lose heart’’ and urged deeper cost cuts to calm concern over the huge expense of covering millions of uninsured Americans.

“What we want to do is force the Congress to make sure that they are acting’’ on recommendations to hold down Medicare and Medicaid spending, the president said, rather than allowing reports to sit unused on a shelf.

Aiming to rally lawmakers, Obama spoke from the White House in a hastily scheduled appearance near the end of a week of tumult for the legislation atop his domestic agenda. “I realize that the last few miles of any race are the hardest to run, but I have to say now is not the time to slow down, and now is certainly not the time to lose heart,’’ he declared.

A few hours earlier, two House committees approved their portions of the sweeping healthcare bill over Republican objections after working overnight. The Ways and Means Committee voted, 23 to 18, to help pay for the measure by imposing a surtax on higher-income taxpayers to raise $544 billion over 10 years. The Education and Labor Committee approved its portion of the bill on a vote of 26 to 22.

That left one more House panel to act, but conservative Democrats were rebelling, demanding additional measures to hold down skyrocketing costs.

On Thursday, the head of the Congressional Budget Office told Congress the legislation taking shape would fail to control public spending on healthcare - remarks that produced fresh criticism from Republicans, and gave pause to Democrats.

In letters to key members of Congress yesterday, administration budget director Peter Orszag called for additional steps to ensure the bill “rewards quality, restrains unnecessary costs, and provides better care to more Americans.’’

Under current law, a Medicare Payment Advisory Commission makes recommendations to lawmakers annually on the rates Medicare pays doctors and other healthcare providers. Lawmakers are not obliged to follow them, or even vote on them. In his letter, Orszag proposed that the recommendations take effect unless rejected by the House and Senate.

In a statement released after Obama spoke, Senate majority leader Harry Reid said lawmakers “now stand on the doorstep’’ of enacting legislation.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signaled that she, too, was open to additional cost-cutting provisions and suggested they may be incorporated into the bill next week by the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Any legislation that emerges from Congress is expected to require insurance companies to issue policies to anyone who seeks coverage, without turning them down or charging higher premiums on the basis of preexisting medical conditions.

To spread insurance more widely, both the House bill and companion proposals in the Senate would rely on hundreds of billions of dollars in federal subsidies to assist lower-income families. The House bill also calls for the government to sell insurance in competition with private industry, a provision that Republicans in particular strongly oppose.

Given the complexities, as well as fresh calls for delay in the Senate, Pelosi opened the door to pushing off a vote past the early August timeline that she and Obama laid out weeks ago.

“We have to see what the Senate will do,’’ she said at a news conference.

While Reid has also said he wants legislation on the Senate floor before lawmakers go home for their August recess, six key senators - three Democrats, one independent, and two Republicans - urged a delay. “We believe that taking additional time to achieve a bipartisan result is critical,’’ they said in a letter yesterday to the Senate leaders of both parties.

The letter was signed by Democrats Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Ron Wyden of Oregon, and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Republicans Susan M. Collins and Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, an independent who usually caucuses with Democrats. Snowe, who met one-on-one with Obama on Thursday, has been deeply involved in talks in recent days aimed at drafting bipartisan legislation.

Obama, who also plans a primetime news conference Wednesday and a healthcare event in Cleveland Thursday, did not mention the August recess.

Instead, he urged lawmakers and the public to look past the daily ups and downs and focus on the “unprecedented progress’’ toward healthcare overhaul: hospitals and drug companies have pledged givebacks to help pay for the bill, the American Medical Association and American Nurses Association endorsed legislation this week, and broad agreement on major elements of the bill.

PENPIX-Main players in Honduras coup crisis talks

The two rivals in Honduras' political crisis -- deposed President Manuel Zelaya and the interim president installed by Honduras' Congress, Roberto Micheletti -- have agreed to a second round of talks in San Jose, Costa Rica, on Saturday, mediated by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias.

A first round of talks last week ended without progress, and there has been little sign since then of common ground between the two sides.

Zelaya, ousted in a June 28 military coup, has said he will not accept any resolution to the crisis unless it includes his return to the presidency. Micheletti has made some overtures but has adamantly refused to consider reinstating Zelaya.

The two men are not expected to meet face to face in the talks, sending high-level delegations instead.

Here are brief portraits of the main players involved:

OUSTED HONDURAN PRESIDENT MANUEL ZELAYA

* A wealthy logging executive who wears a cowboy hat with his suits, Zelaya, 56, won a surprise victory as a moderate liberal in the 2005 presidential election. Originally close to Honduras' ruling elite and known as a guitar-strumming motorbike rider, he moved further left politically and sought financing and energy deals with Venezuela, forging close ties with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and echoing his populist rhetoric.

His efforts to extend term limits for the president were considered unconstitutional by his critics and sparked the coup, when the army arrested him and sent him on a plane to Costa Rica in his pajamas on the morning of a vote seen as a step toward extending his mandate.

Zelaya has said he is open to a diplomatic solution to the political crisis but that he would only accept a plan that includes his reinstatement as president.

A recent poll showed he was more popular than his opponent, with 46 percent of public support compared with 30 percent for Micheletti. His supporters took to the streets before the weekend talks, blocking major highways on Friday, including the northern access into the capital, Tegucigalpa.

Zelaya attempted to return home on July 5 but failed when troops prevented his plane from landing. Holed up in a hotel in Nicaragua's capital, he vowed to return but would not say when or how he would do so.

INTERIM PRESIDENT ROBERTO MICHELETTI

* Micheletti, 60, is a veteran of Zelaya's Liberal Party who was head of Congress when he was picked by the assembly as interim president until elections scheduled for November.

A centrist who mixes social programs with deep conservative beliefs, he was formerly an ally of Zelaya but opposed his shift to the left and now has the backing of the business and political elite. Micheletti has said the removal of Zelaya saved Honduras from "Chavismo," a term for the style of socialism championed by Chavez.

Micheletti maintains the ouster of Zelaya was a legal transition of power and that Zelaya cannot be allowed to resume his post as president because he violated the constitution and defied the Supreme Court.

In the days leading up to Saturday's talks, he said he would be willing to call early elections and even resign as part of a solution to the crisis, provided Zelaya agreed not to seek a return to power. He would also consider granting an amnesty to Zelaya for his alleged political crimes, should he return

Ritz, Marriott Hotels in Jakarta Hit by Bombings; 8 People Die

Latest reports in Indonesian capital Jakarta say that the death toll in two bomb blasts at luxury hotels on Friday has gone up from nine to twelve, while the injured list is still pegged at 50.

A foreign news agency also reported that police in neighbouring Malaysia have stepped up security in major hotels and shopping malls across the country in the wake of the bombings.

It quoted the country's police chief, Musa Hassan, as saying that he had already issued orders for an immediate increase in security measures nationwide as a precaution.

Indonesian Police said one explosion hit the Ritz-Carlton, ripping off its facade, and the other the Marriott Hotel.

A third blast went off almost three hours later in the north of the city - no injuries have yet been reported.

It is not yet known who carried out the bomb attacks. The blasts occurred at about 7:30 a.m. local time

Ambulances are on the scene and there is a heavy police presence, says our correspondent.

Unconfirmed reports say a New Zealander and a South Korean were injured.

Consular staff are trying to track their nationals, and Australia issued a warning against unnecessary travel to Indonesia.

The Manchester United football team was due to arrive in Indonesia on Saturday and was booked to stay at the Ritz-Carlton. The blasts may raise doubts about the team's tour, PA news agency reported.

The two hotels are in Jakarta's central business district, the BBC reports.

The explosions come two weeks after peaceful presidential elections in Indonesia, which were won by incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Officials say they have no idea what caused the latest explosions.

Church bombings in 2000 killed 19 people. Bomb attacks on two nightclubs in Bali in October 2002 killed 202 people, most of them Australian.

The Marriott Hotel was the target of a bomb attack in August 2003 in which 13 people were killed. A bomb outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta in 2004 killed nine people.

Since then, a combination of new laws, anti-terror training, international cooperation and reintegration measures have kept Indonesia peaceful

Mandela to celebrate a quiet 91st birthday tomorrow

As South Africans plan to set aside 67 minutes of their time in community service as a symbolic tribute to anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela on his 91st birthday, the noble laureate will spend the day at home with close friends and family.

The Resource Development Manager at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Ruth Rensburg said, Mr. Mandela will be spending July 18, as he has in recent years, at home surrounded by friends, family and comrades.

The South African government has asked people in this country and the world to pay tribute to Mr. Mandela's life by spending 67 minutes of their time in the service of others.

Sixty-seven refers to the 67 years that Mr. Mandela had dedicated while fighting for freedom and rights.

"This day is symbolic in terms of the commitment he showed in his life and he hopes people work not only on Mandela Day, but every day in their communities to uplift those in need," Ms. Rensburg said.

Mr. Mandela himself in a recorded interview said: "It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.

Mandela Day will not be a holiday, but a day devoted to service."

Pakistan's Supreme Court quashes conviction against Nawaz Sharif

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has quashed a nine-year-old criminal conviction for hijacking against the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The ruling clears the way for the leader of the country’s biggest opposition party to hold public office again.

Mr Sharif was charged and convicted after he ordered the diversion of a plane carrying Pervez Musharraf, the then chief of the Army, to Pakistan from Sri Lanka on October 12, 1999. Mr Sharif was ousted by Mr Musharraf in a military coup on the same day.

The court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support the conviction.

After the coup, Mr Musharraf went on to rule Pakistan until last August, when he resigned as President under the threat of impeachment.

Mauritius Sends Back 6,000 Bangladeshi Workers Home

Bangladesh's overseas job market that fetches high earnings is set to shrink as Mauritian authorities have decided to send back 6,000 workers by the end of the year, citing the global recession.
This will be the second biggest job loss after Malaysia cancelled over 55,000 job visas in March.
Malaysia had promised to take 300,000 Bangladeshi workers before the recession set in.
Mauritius has asked the Bangladeshis, 4,000 of whom work in clothing factories, to leave by the year-end in a move to protect local jobs in the recession-hit textile sector.
Bangladesh and Mauritius both depend heavily on ready- made garment manufacture and exports.
Manpower export is the second highest foreign exchange earner for Bangladesh. But it finds its workers returning home from several places, including the United Arab Emirates.
On an official visit to Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina managed to persuade the Saudi royalty to give preferential treatment to Bangladeshi workers.

Black boxes 'damaged' in Iran air disaster

A day after an Iranian passenger plane crashed in flames killing all 168 people on board, aviation officials were Thursday examining the aircraft's damaged flight data recorders to try to determine the cause of the disaster.
Debris from the plane was littered around the crash site.

Caspian Airlines flight 7908 - a Russian-made Tupolev Tu-154M - plunged to the ground and disintegrated minutes into its flight from Tehran to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, officials said.

Flight data recorders were recovered Wednesday from the crash site - a smoldering crater strewn with charred plane pieces and tattered passports -but Iranian media reported the so-called "black boxes" had been badly damaged.

"If efforts to retrieve data from the boxes fail, they will be sent back to the country that has produced them so that they could be repaired in order to find the reason behind the crash," Transport Ministry official Ahmad Majidi said, according to Press TV.

A team of investigators from the Russian Interstate Aviation Committee is expected to join the crash scene investigation to work alongside Iranian aviation authorities, the agency said on its Web site. See a map of the crash location »

An agency official declined to comment further, saying the plane was operated by an Iranian company and nothing is known about it.

A Tupolev representative told CNN the manufacturer will not comment until the aviation committee releases its report on the crash.

Conversations between the pilot and the ground were normal and did not indicate any technical problems, the Press TV reported, citing the managing director of Iran's airport authority.

Wednesday's disaster was the fifth major airline accident this year, following crashes of planes flown by Colgan Air, Turkish Airlines, Air France and Yemenia Airways. A US Airways pilot managed to land his plane safely on the Hudson river in New York in January, with no major injuries, after the plane lost power.
Don't Miss

Aviation analyst Kieran Daly told CNN that many aircraft operating in Iran are aging Tupolevs, some dating back to the 1970s.

He described Tupolevs as "workhorses of the old Soviet aviation system."

But he said the Caspian Airlines fleet is based on a slightly newer design, dating to the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Pictures from the scene were "consistent with a high-speed impact," he said. But he added that there could be large debris not seen on television, and that could change his analysis.

Pakistan promises to catch India attackers

Pakistan promised India on Thursday that it will do everything in its power to bring the Mumbai terror attackers to justice, a key demand by New Delhi to improve relations.

The prime ministers of the two nuclear powers also agreed that action on terrorism should not be linked to their peace talks, the joint statement said, something that has been asked for by Islamabad.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yusuf Gilani met on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Summit in Sharm el-Sheik, in a much anticipated meeting that comes after a seven-month freeze in dialogue due to an attack by Pakistani gunmen on India's financial capital of Mumbai that killed 166 people.

"Prime Minister Singh reiterated the need to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice. Prime Minister Gilani assured that Pakistan will do everything in their power in this regard," said the statement.

The two prime ministers agreed to cooperate on the investigation into the incident, with India maintains was planned and launched from Pakistan.

"Pakistan has provided an updated status dossier on the investigations of the Mumbai attacks and (the prime minister) has sought additional information and evidence," the statement said.

The leaders also agreed that they would "share real time, credible and actionable information on any future terrorist threat."

In move of great importance to Pakistan, the two leaders also agreed to delink their wider talks on issues such as water, demilitarization and the dispute territory of Kashmir from the discussions over terrorism.

India previously had been unwilling to continue the composite talks until its concerns over Pakistan response to terrorism had been addressed.

"The most important thing is that what we were hoping, for that there should be constructive engagement, (happened)," said Pakistani minister of state for foreign affairs, Nawabzada Malik Amad Khan.

"They decided in the future there will be constant engagement and that will help us break the deadlock," he told The Associated Press.

In India, meanwhile, Lalit Mansingh, the former foreign secretary, described the meeting as a step forward and welcomed Pakistan's commitment to go after the attacks, nothing that they are scheduled to try five suspects for plotting the attacks.

"These are steps forward. If there is actually a trial and we see that it is proper trial I think it would restore (India's) confidence in Pakistan," he told India's NDTV network. "The prime minister is giving flexibility to Pakistan and Pakistan will be tested on that."

Earlier this month India reacted with anger when a Pakistani court ordered the release of Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, the founder of the group India blames for the Mumbai siege.

India and Pakistan have been adversaries for decades. They have fought three wars, two over the disputed territory of Kashmir, since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.

In 2001, a suicide attack on the Indian Parliament pushed them to the brink of war again, but tensions eventually subsided. They began formal peace talks in 2004, but they were put on hold after the Mumbai attacks.

India has accused Pakistani authorities of supporting militants fighting in Kashmir. India, the U.S. and other nations have urged Pakistan to do more to curb Islamic militant groups.

Promoter wants Jacksons to sing at UK tribute gig

The company behind Michael Jackson's planned comeback in London that was to have kicked off on Monday said he wanted to stage a one-off tribute concert in the city featuring members of the late pop star's family.

AEG Live signed up the star for 50 concerts at London's O2 Arena starting on July 13, but the 50-year-old singer died in Los Angeles less than three weeks before his eagerly anticipated return to the stage.

More than 750,000 people snapped up tickets to the "This Is It" shows, and they have been given the choice of a full refund or keeping their tickets as a momento.

AEG Live chief executive Randy Phillips said on Tuesday he was hopeful of holding the tribute gig in London on Aug. 29, which would have been Jackson's 51st birthday, although time was running out.

"We have to make some hard decisions this week, otherwise it will be too late to even contemplate doing anything on the 29th," Phillips told BBC Radio 6 Music.

"The number one item I'm discussing is presenting This Is It the production, hopefully with the Jacksons and may be Janet, and other artists," Phillips added.

"What we're thinking about is one massive tribute that's broadcast around the globe. We've opted to go to broadcast television, either cable/satellite, or traditional broadcast."

He conceded that most of the 27 Jackson dates booked in 2009 at the O2 Arena would probably go unfilled. The remaining 23 dates were scheduled for early 2010.

"It's going to be hard, unless we do something with the Michael tribute, to fill those dates in now, if not impossible."

On Monday, Jackson's father Joe said the "King of Pop" was not ready to perform 50 shows in London, and that he had been worried about the impact the gigs would have on his son's health.

In a statement, Phillips said Jackson's adviser at the time told AEG Live that the singer would perform 50 concerts. Jackson was rehearsing for This Is It in Los Angeles the day before he died of cardiac arrest.
